TECHNOLOGY IN OBSTETRICS

Technology is the image of men. It is a war gun, a hope of life, one more day or a better one… But the technology brought us comfort and an easier way to live. It gives us new horizons and lets us know (in fact, just suspect) the immeasurable universe of “unknown knowledge” that surrounds us.

The more we learn, we understand that there is much more to learn. Education is the base of humanity, and technology helps to bring an answer to a never ending why. In health area technologies play an important role to answer this “why”: in the early detection of diseases (as cancer) and even providing the medical history of patients, that it is easily accessible in computer networks inside the health institution. But all this use and application of technology for health began earlier: in university.

As a second year university student, all new experience is a challenge to learn from. And this year has been the one to acquire knowledge. Technologies have been important to this constant learning, even being so basic (compare with the sophisticated one that exist today). The first rapprochement with technology was in the classroom with the projectors and the use of PowerPoint’s to teach contents; also we used computer rooms, in first instance to learn cell biology and through all year to practice our english precisely in this blog. One of the most important resource that was teach to us is the search of reliable and updated information of all kind of diseases, how it’s originated from the point of view of molecular mechanisms, etc. Besides, being online it’s essential in university because all classes, notes to study and news are informed through “U-Cursos” on the web. This is one more evidence to emphasize the relevance of globalization and the “mass media” that is reached through the internet and his contribution to the widening of new knowledge.

Microscopes are another important technology to learn histology and also are useful instruments to midwives that are working on research (for example researching about the uterine cancer). As a student, microscopes are a useful tool to learn watching the variety of tissues that exist in each structure in our body and from this (in future) we can generate diagnoses of abnormalities that can exist in it. We also use microscopes to observe a fecundation. This in future it is essential to make for example an artificial insemination and assist the creation of a new life for couples who have problems to make this naturally.

For taking care and control of patients (mothers ideally), we make use instruments as the thermometer and the sphygmomanometer with the stethoscope to take the pressure, ultrasound to watch over the proper growth of the baby, mammograms to control presence of tumors and “PAP” exam to prevent uterine cancer.

In conclusion technologies are a good “gun” when are focused on prevention of diseases, on improve the quality of people life and complications that can means death in future, and is a good tool when knowledge it’s available through the web for academic purposes and to complement researchs reaching solutions to questions that don’t have explanation yet. The essential when exist this availability of technology is doesn’t play with being gods, we have to be rationals and realistic because not even the most advanced technology can cure pathologies as AIDS and cancer. People dies every day and nothing can avoid it.
