TECHNOLOGY IN OBSTETRICS

Technology is the image of men. It is a war gun, a hope of life, one more day or a better one… But the technology brought us comfort and an easier way to live. It gives us new horizons and lets us know (in fact, just suspect) the immeasurable universe of “unknown knowledge” that surrounds us.

The more we learn, we understand that there is much more to learn. Education is the base of humanity, and technology helps to bring an answer to a never ending why. In health area technologies play an important role to answer this “why”: in the early detection of diseases (as cancer) and even providing the medical history of patients, that it is easily accessible in computer networks inside the health institution. But all this use and application of technology for health began earlier: in university.

As a second year university student, all new experience is a challenge to learn from. And this year has been the one to acquire knowledge. Technologies have been important to this constant learning, even being so basic (compare with the sophisticated one that exist today). The first rapprochement with technology was in the classroom with the projectors and the use of PowerPoint’s to teach contents; also we used computer rooms, in first instance to learn cell biology and through all year to practice our english precisely in this blog. One of the most important resource that was teach to us is the search of reliable and updated information of all kind of diseases, how it’s originated from the point of view of molecular mechanisms, etc. Besides, being online it’s essential in university because all classes, notes to study and news are informed through “U-Cursos” on the web. This is one more evidence to emphasize the relevance of globalization and the “mass media” that is reached through the internet and his contribution to the widening of new knowledge.

Microscopes are another important technology to learn histology and also are useful instruments to midwives that are working on research (for example researching about the uterine cancer). As a student, microscopes are a useful tool to learn watching the variety of tissues that exist in each structure in our body and from this (in future) we can generate diagnoses of abnormalities that can exist in it. We also use microscopes to observe a fecundation. This in future it is essential to make for example an artificial insemination and assist the creation of a new life for couples who have problems to make this naturally.

For taking care and control of patients (mothers ideally), we make use instruments as the thermometer and the sphygmomanometer with the stethoscope to take the pressure, ultrasound to watch over the proper growth of the baby, mammograms to control presence of tumors and “PAP” exam to prevent uterine cancer.

In conclusion technologies are a good “gun” when are focused on prevention of diseases, on improve the quality of people life and complications that can means death in future, and is a good tool when knowledge it’s available through the web for academic purposes and to complement researchs reaching solutions to questions that don’t have explanation yet. The essential when exist this availability of technology is doesn’t play with being gods, we have to be rationals and realistic because not even the most advanced technology can cure pathologies as AIDS and cancer. People dies every day and nothing can avoid it.

WHO WOULD NOT LIKE TO GO TO FRANCE?

This time I would write about France, the country that I would love to visit, because I imagine that is a too wonderful country, and i like the people who live there.
I think that the most of the people would like to travel once in their lives to Europe and particularly France, because always from small saw movies which is shown as a romantic city and a beautiful tourist destination.
France is the most visited country in the world. It has everything that you could ever want to see on your holidays: a great city like Paris, good beaches, more monuments than any other country, lovely nature, incredible mountain scenery; need I go on?
I would visit several places, first of all I would visit the famous Eiffel Tower, because it is an icon of his capital Paris.
Then also I would visit the Louvre Museum, the Palace of Versailles, Musée d'Orsay, the Arc de Triomphe, between other popular tourist destinations that give to the country a fill of mistery because of his historical landmarks through the centuries. I almost forgot the architecture of his Gothics cathedrals and basilicas as the Saint Denis Basilica, Notre-Dame de Chartres and Sainte-Chapelle.
On the other hand I would like to know the culture of the people living there, their customs and their daily activities, it must be very different from Chile. Also, I would love to taste the French cuisine rated as the best food in the world!
I would like only to travel one day to France, and discover all the beautiful things that has, but this is not enough for changing my country, because I love and I love the people who live here!

I AM SAM

I am Sam will likely make you say, "Wow!" afterward of see her because it is a masterpiece on every artistic and technical level.
The film tells the story of a young woman who leaves her daughter the same day of her birth with your father, Sam Dawson, who is mentally deficient. The film narrates the difficulties he had when, after 6 years, Lucy starts to have more mental ability than his father. The State questioned Sam's ability to educate his daughter so that is facing a trial that it could lose custody.

The music is very intersting largely consists of Beatles tunes performed by other artists, fits the film perfectly. Sam and his friends are all a bit obsessed with the Beatles and the lyrics often complement emotions and actions.

Also on I am Sam we can see a heart-wrenching story that's something of an exciting, emotional roller-coaster. There are many humorous scenes, often centered on Sam and his buddies going about the world with a kind of Winnie the Pooh-like wisdom that seems more honest and admirable than most of the film's "normal" folks. Of course, there are also many scenes that will require tissues for tears.
The truth is that I am very tearful but this movie excites you really believe that playing such important issues as love, proving to be the main ingredient in the family and in life.
I think that this movie teaches you to value the simple thing of the life, also it shows that some ideas are only outcomes of prejudices.
I recommend to all people that to see the movie because help you a to look a just beyond, also is wonderfull.

“LET'S FACE IT - MEN AND BOYS JUST HAVE DIFFERENT BRAINS FROM WOMEN AND GIRLS”.

The brain is the center of the nervous system in all vertebrate and it is extremely complex. The cerebral cortex of the human brain contains roughly 15–33 billion neurons, perhaps more, linked with up to 10,000 synaptic connections each. Each cubic millimeter of cerebral cortex contains roughly one billion synapses.

Today it is believed that there are differences between the "female brain"and "male brain", but it is not. The works which have appeared over recent years claiming to be inspired by scientific findings apparently to show that men and women think differently due to a different brain development, are truly questionable. There are functional and morphological differences between the male and female brain. The male brain is longer, for instance, and when it comes to language, the relevant areas of the brain are more strongly activated in females. No study to date has shown gender-specific processes involved in building up neuronal networks during learning.

The terms “feminine brain” and “masculine brain” refer to “ways of being” described in cognitive terms rather than to any biological reality. Baron-Cohen, believes that men tend to be more “methodical” (ability to understand mechanical systems) and women better communicators (ability to communicate and understand others), and he suggests that autism can be understood as an extreme form of the “masculine brain”. But he does not propose that men and women have radically different brains nor that autistic women have a masculine brain. He employs the terms “masculine and feminine brain” to refer to particular cognitive profiles, which is an unfortunate choice of terminology if it contributes to distorted ideas concerning the workings of the brain.

The much more important individual variations are such as to rule out being able to know if a young girl, taken at random, will be less capable of learning a particular subject than a young boy taken at random, etc.
This is really true, and while there is no scientific study stating that women and men think differently, this will remain just a myth.

A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE

Today is a bit difficult to keep a healthy lifestyle, because the time should be devoted to exercises or healthy food preparation, is used in other activities. But with interest and dedication you can achieve it.

For your information, a healthy lifestyle encompasses many things, for examples:

-Eating healthy foods

-Avoid excessive fats, sugar, and alcohol

-No nicotine

-Drink plenty of water

-Exercise.

Healthy food is essential. You are what you eat, so if you eat healthy, you are healthy. Food that is low in fat content is good. Unless that fat is poly-unsaturated, mono-unsaturated, or omega 3. These are some of the good fats. Some of the bad fats are trans and saturated fats.

Low sugar content is another plus. Sucrose is the bad kind of sugar. Glucose is the good kind of sugar.

A variety of food. Fruits and vegetables are high in vitamins and minerals, which you need for a good alimentation.

Also the exercise is a key for a healthy lifestyle as well. Go to the gym every once in a while, or daily. Or take a run around your neighborhood. Even taking your dog for a walk is good. So long as it's routine, about an hour, and is at least moderately active. Helps prevent the disease such as: heart disease, cardio vascular disease, diabetes, and obesity. It also improves mental health, and prevents depression.

It's not easy to go from a couch potato to a healthy person. Don't be discouraged if you satisfy cravings for ice cream, hamburgers, etc. as long as you don't have a steady diet of unhealthy food.

Courage, you can lead a healthy lifestyle.

DEALING WITH STRESS AT WORK

For most of us, work is a significant and meaningful feature of life. While work can provide us satisfaction, self-esteem and earning power, it can also be a place of stress and worry, producing a range of physical and emotional problems which can be overwhelming.

It is impossible to completely eradicate work related pressures so it is important to learn how to 'manage' them. For examples:

-Manage your time more effectively

-Relax: Whenever possible try to do the occasional simple stretching exercise and practice some deep breathing techniques.

-Know what triggers your stress: Identify the causes of your stress.

-Turn to colleagues for support: Not everyone is out to get you!

Making Lifestyle Changes to Deal with Work Related Stress. For examples:

-Hobbies and interests: Regular activities outside work will increase your social network and take your mind off work worries. There is increasing evidence that physical activity reduces stress levels quite significantly.

-Learn to relax: Learning to relax can improve sleep and relieve stress-related physical pains such as headaches.

-Avoid negative responses: Avoid unhelpful responses to stress such as increased alcohol and caffeine consumption and smoking.

Stress is an inevitable but complex companion to our working lives. Without challenges and pressures, work would lack sparkle, but we all have the capacity to be overwhelmed by work-related stress, and to experience its exhausting effects. The aim should be to manage stress by becoming aware of our individual ways of responding to it, and through making effective changes to our working lifestyle.

VALPARAISO

"Valparaiso is a natural bay that is surrounded by a mountain chain of cordilleran type that bathes its foothills in the sea and transforms it in an amphitheatre that looks towards the Pacific".

Valparaíso, port and city, is located in the central zone of Chile, 120 kms to the Northwest of Santiago; it is a hidden jewel in Latin America.

This is one of my favorite places that I know. I have family that has its own house on the "los placeres hill" and they welcome me every year in Valparaiso. They love me so much and they spoiled me a lot.

This city is very special for me, because since I was a little girl I got to this place and I have discovered so many beautiful places between all those hills. A port full of history and nostalgia for me.

In Valparaiso you can see very beautiful old architecture, you can visit the Port which is very nice, you can visit the National Congress or visit La Sebastiana, Pablo Neruda's house and a lot of other things. For all that is considered a world Heritage.

One of the things that I like to do in this city is riding a cable car; they are very beautiful and old. In them you can ride up the Valparaiso's hills and find hidden amazing places of this city.

Valparaiso is a wonderful place to forget the stress of Santiago and to get some rest.

MY FAVORITE KIND OF MUSIC

Hello, today I'm going to talk about my favorite kind of music,

My favorite kind of music is Hip Hop. Since I was a little girl until these days I listen it.

Hip hop music is a musical genre that developed as part of hip hop culture, and is defined by four key stylistic elements: rapping, DJing/scratching, sampling (or synthesis), and beatboxing. Hip hop began in the South Bronx of New York City in the 1970s.

When I was a little girl, my eldest sister encouraged me to listen this kind of music. Because of her, I knew the Hip Hop music, she gave me all her cassettes and CDs rappers that she had, since then the Hip Hop caught my attention and I kept listening it.

My favorite group is Cypress Hill. Cypress Hill is an American Latino hip hop group from South Gate, California. Cypress Hill was the first Latino group to have platinum and multi-platinum albums, selling over 18 million albums worldwide.

They are one of the most well known groups in West Coast rap and are critically acclaimed for their first two groundbreaking albums.

The band members are B-Real (Lead rapping), DJ Muggs (Turntables and production), Eric Bobo (Drums and percussion), Sen Dog (Rapping).

When I am studying I don’t listen music because it devolves me, but Hip Hop is the only kind of music that I listen, because it fills my soul and it makes me happy.

The Hip Hop music fills my life…

My Blogging Experience!

My ultimate blog, Time passes fast!
At last we arrive at the end of first semester and at the same time are closer to the end of Pre-intermediate English and obviously of the blog. It has been a nice experience because I had no Blog before. I think this Blog serves for write ideas, thoughts, about a group I like or music stiles, everyday things, about my feelings or (as in this Blog) for English activities.

I think that I have learn a lot of new vocabulary talking about the topics that are requested (the topics are really entertaining) and at the same time to express myself writing, that is not an easy work for me.

My most typical mistakes is verb forms, a disadvantage about this is that if I'm wrong in the grammar of my Blog, there are no instances for correct my mistakes (apart from that the teacher corrects in the blog) and I'll probably follow doing the same faults, besides I improve the writing and not the speaking part that is also important.
The blogs of my classmates is very interesting, besides has helped me to know them a little more.
The advantage of learn writing is that we do it in computers and this make the class more dynamic and fun, leaving the routine of everyday classes with a notebook and a teacher talking.

My ideal Job

This time I will write about my ideal job I would love to exercise in the future. First, has to be a job that makes me happy, a job that makes me feels complete. And if it's possible, that let me time for stay in my home and share with my family too.

Where I would like to work is in the Hospital “Luis Tisné”, because it is very beautiful and also is very near to my house.
I would like to work in the area of Neonatology.

I think that for do this work, I have to be willing to give everything for the well-being of the baby. Obviously, have all the abilities necessary and be psychologically prepared to face any situation that could be problematic.
As midwife, I must make the integration of the family at this important moment, as is the arrival of a new member to the family. For the pregnant woman is really important, she have the support of the people nearest and be accompanied at this moment of joy.
I would like to attend people more simple, because it is these people who most need our help.
As a health's specialty, there are not troubles to find a job because are very required and births happen every day.

Education and Prevention

The prevention is closely linked to the concept of education, understood as a complex social process by the number of people who convenes and the variables that it proposes (society, economy, etc).
Prevention has like propose to prevent the emergence of risks of health in person, family and community. It involves to act for a problem that does not appear or, to lessen its effects, this is accomplished through research, teamwork and also it needs the knowledge, the initiative and creativity.
Like a future midwife I will contribute to the education of society, in the area of family planning and sexuality, for example prevent and promote through of talks to the partner about reproductive health to prevent STDs. Also like midwife, I will contribute to the health care of pregnant women and of the babies to prevent diseases.

The health professionals do different activities of prevention depending of the individual, family and community levels, for example through lectures, brochures, murals and many other forms.
The objective of these activities is to educate people for the prevention of diseases, but if this can not change the mentality and lifestyle of people, prevention will not be.

In Chile, the main issues that must educate to meet the needs of society, is the prevention of sexually transmitted diseases like AIDS and we must also avoid alcoholism, smoking and other bad habits that cause serious diseases today.

Gender Role in Health Care

Today I will talk about the prejudices that affect both, men and women, and that cause so many differences between genders.
One of the examples that I can talk about is my career. Today, more and more men are integrated into this career, this lets us to see how to change the prejudices, because this career was purely feminine. I think this is fine, because it delivers diversity to the career and a different view. Also I think that little by little the difference between women and men that work in the midwifery will be reduced and will be equal.

Respect to responsibility, both genders have the same responsibilities in health, and therefore should have the same salary, although today is not so.
In this career, perhaps the users prefer to be attended for a midwife (female) than for a midwife (male), because the user can feel more comfortable with a woman than with a man, or simply she thinks that midwives (female) can be put in place as a woman.

Compared with others countries, the gender issues among health workers, are similar with Chile, althought always exist problems gender, but this has been reduced over the years.
In general, I think that they should open our minds, and ignore those prejudices that do not help at all, and appreciate to a professional for their quality and competences, not that it is male or female.

My Future as a Midwife ♥

In this cold day in Santiago, I will share a little more of my life. This time I will write about my ideal job I would love to exercise in the future. First, has to be a job that makes me happy, that makes me feels good, that I enjoy to do, a job that makes me feel complete.
I would like to work every day of the week except the weekend, anytime. The weekend´s will be time for me, stay in my home and share with my family.
In the place I would like to work is in the Hospital "Luis Tisné", because when I went to have a practice I really liked, and still more that is very close to my house. This public hospital is located in "Peñalolén" and is very beautiful, and the people attending this hospital is very simple.

When I finish my five years of Obstetrics, I plan to do a specialization in the area of newborns: Neonatology. I think that for do this work you need qualities like love to that new lifes that come on the way and be willing to give everything for the well-being of the baby. Obviously, as skills you must have a lot of studies in the area and be psychologically prepared to face any situation that could be problematic.

I think that I would be good at this job, because in this moment I feel that a newborn is one of the most beautiful creature that could exist, full of life to build a new personal history diferent from all other.

My favorite Subject of my Career

Really it is very difficult for me to choose a favorite subject, because all subjects are interesting... My favorite subject in the career is obstetrics physiological.

But the most entertaining is Human's Ontogenic Development. These are the contents in this semester. This involves all development of the embryo and fetus as the formation of extremities, the heart, respiratory system, between others. I like a lot, because is important for my career, for the care of pregnancy and newborn and because is funny to imagine that all of us went through these stages.

Ontogenic Development is taught by many teachers, as Marcela Fuenzalida, Miguel Concha and Mariana Rojas. It is curious that most of them are veterinary.

Learn the processes that occur during each month and day of gestation is very difficult.
But there is also less difficult things such as fertilization and all its stages, which in my opinion is easier. In general, my grades, in my opinion are good. :)

For all this, I have learned a lot this semester because are three units of the subject with a lot of contents. I've learned so much in one semester, that I can't imagine what more interesting things I'll find out from this moment until I end my career.

For me being in this university and studying Obstetrics and Childcare, involves to me a lot of fears that I hope some day to leave them behind.

Obstetrics and Childcare Website

To start, I have to say that I've never made use of related websites to my career. The only approach to her, are the websites that teachers recommend for investigation, like Pubmed or with fiable contents. But the most closely to we are treating now, is Aula Digital , where all classes are uploaded for study of the students.

Because of this activity I search on the Internet websites related to Obstetrics and Childcare, that I could enjoy visiting (because enter to Aula Digital isn't very enjoyable, in fact nothing with the University! jajaja) I search specifically for the mother-son beautiful relationship. It is the first time I visit this site.

The link is http://amazingpregnancy.com/

The site is aimed towards those women that are pregnant or have just given birth.
I like it because here I can find picture galleries such as ultrasounds, which as website's name says, are amazing! They are also organised by the weeks of pregnancy.

We could also find videos and articles related to Obstetrics and Childcare. It's a very nice website of Maternity.

A beautiful 3D ultrasound :)

A little of me

Hi! my name is Rocío Villanueva, I'm 20 years old. I'm an Obstetrics and Chilcare college student (future midwife) and I'm doing this blog because of an English class for my university: "Universidad de Chile". I live in Santiago Chile, in Ñuñoa commune, is very beatiful commune that has welcomed me throughout my life.
I'm a person who loves being accompanied, except when I need to think. I consider myself a very happy person, who likes enjoy life and laugh all the time.

I hate that persons lie to me, because of that I try to be a very sincere girl... I mean: "Do not do to others, what you don't want they do to you"
I also like doing sports because it is very funny and very good for health.

About my objetives, one of them is to finish study and practice my profession as a future midwife. I feel that my profession is very nice, and I love children. that's why I want to work for them, and try to take care of your health.

In this terrible earthquake that lived Chile, I was not present, because I was on holiday in Bolivia. In Bolivia the news were terrible, I was scared for my family.

As a future midwife, in a tragedy like this, I'd like to go to the most destroyed places and help the people most affected by these situations. Provide nursing care and if there some baby give all the necessary care.
